To find answers to some of the most common questions we receive, we encourage you to check out our FAQs, listed below.

  • How does a solar photovoltaic system work?

The photovoltaic (PV) modules on solar panels convert sunlight into electricity. PV solar systems utilize modular panels made of silicon, which react directly to sunlight. Through this photovoltaic process, the system generates direct current (DC) electricity. The DC electricity is routed from the panels to an inverter which converts the electricity into alternating current (AC) for use in your home or business.

  • How much does a solar electric system cost?

Solar system costs are based on the size of the system. Keep in mind that each system is sized to the unique annual energy needs of each customer, the facility, and the optimal amount of roof space. Site-specific elements, such as consumption patterns and electric rate schedules, and financial incentives—for which you may or may not not qualify—will affect your total system investment. Please contact Yes Solar Solutions at (919) 459-4155 for a free analysis and cost estimate based on your specific situation and needs.

  • Does my house or business have to face south?

No. South-facing systems are ideal, but southeast or south-southwest orientations can be used with minimal loss of production efficiency.

  • Can I make additions to my Yes Solar system if I add on to my home or business?

Yes. Additional modules can be added to your system up to the load limit of your inverter. Inverters can also be added to expand the system. Or, if you decide to use microinverters, you can add additional solar panels at any time in the future.

  • How do I sell electricity back to the utility company?

Under the sell-all option, the consumer still buys electricity from the utility company, but they also generate electricity with their own system, which the utility company buys, and which goes out to the grid for distribution. Starting on January 1, 2011, all Progress/Duke Energy residential customers can also net meter their solar production, which means they use what they produce first, and any excess not used goes back to the gird.  They are billed by the utility for what they receive at night or when they are not generating energy, with a credit applied for the excess they sent back.  They pay the “net” of the billed and excess.

  • Can my roof support the weight of the solar array?

Yes. Solar panel and mounting equipment add very little load to your roof. In most cases, the solar power system will add less than 4 pounds per square foot of load. Virtually all modern construction is designed to support loads far greater than this. Some older buildings may require some structural work prior to installing a system, however, but this is a very rare exception. All Yes Solar Solutions-designed plans include a structural engineer review and engineer’s stamp of approval for your peace of mind.

  • What kind of permits do I need?

We take care of permits for you! As a provider of turnkey solar energy systems and a North Carolina and South Carolina general contractor and electrical contractor, Yes Solar Solutions obtains all necessary building and electrical permits for each system we install. We ensure the installation is done properly and meets all state and local building code requirements. All of our solar installers are Yes Solar employees, not subcontractors, you know you’re always getting the best quality work available. We have more NABCEP certified employees than any company in North Carolina and all of our employees are OSHA 10 certified, and most are OSHA 30 certified.

  • How do we get started?

It’s as easy as “one, two, three.” First, Yes Solar Solutions inspects your home or business, and we evaluate a year’s worth of your electric bills to create a profile of annual energy needs. Second, we design a system that’s tailored to meet your requirements, and we present the design to you in a proposal. Third, once you approve the design, we execute a contract and get the wheels in motion, initiating the required paperwork for local building permits, rebates, and utility interconnection.

  • How long does the typical system take to install?

Installation time depends in the size of the system. The typical residential solar system takes less than one week to complete.

  • Is solar electricity right for my home or business?

Most likely, yes. With continually-rising electric rates, solar electricity is right for almost every home or business in NC and SC. If you own your home and would like to know if solar electricity can help you, contact us today for a free site evaluation and cost-benefit analysis.
